The Dillinger Escape Plan, A Most Dangerous History

I If the name Dillinger rings a bell then you might have heard of the American Gangster, John Dillinger, or the rapper Young Dillinger? Well, as dangerous as the name might imply D.E.P. or The Dillinger Escape Plan is just that. They are of a sub genre or type of Metal called "Mathcore" (should you describe music with tags.) In VH1's Metal Evolution documentary, Tomas Haake (Meshuggah drummer) cited them as "One of the world's most dangerous bands," this is a title that one can argue might be fitting of this group that has ties to some rock / metal heavy hitters and themselves have had a fairly chaotic history.

It would appear that the band began around Morris Plains, New Jersey in 1997 as Arcane (a Hardcore Punk band) but before that, there existed two bands:

- Malfactor (which existed from 1992-1995), it had John Fulton on guitar and Chris Pennie on drums (there were two others, but I cannot find out who they were.) They had put out some songs: "Indignation," "Deliverance," "Walking On Broken" (not sure full song name), and "Phonmeros." - Samsara, (which was active from 1995-1997) and composed of: Chris Pennie - drums for: Prozak (New Jersey high school band), Boxer, Malfactor, Samsara, Arcane, The D.E.P., All Else Failed, Coheed And Cambria, Idiot Pilot, & Return To Earth, etc. Adam Doll - bass for: Samsara, Arcane, and The D.E.P. (keyboards on Irony Is A Dead Scene) John Fulton - guitar in: Malfactor, The D.E.P., Astronaught/Cosmonaught, & guitar and synth in Samsara Marguerite Amato - vocals The band had released some songs in 1995. They were titled: "Enlightenment," "Pilgrimage / I'm The Way," "Drifting / In A Song." Then in 1996 they made: "Fast Riser," "Father," "Ripples," and "Carry Me." - Arcane (Active around 1996-1997.) Dimitri Minakakis - vocals here & in The D.E.P. Chris Pennie - drums Ben Weinman - guitars (replaced by Derek Brantley later? Derek is later replaced by John Fulton before the band would tour.) Bruce Fulton - bass (replaced by Adam Doll later?) Brad McMann - backup vocals

These were bands that the members had played in. However, D.E.P. later became the name of a nameless band after Arcane. Then a friend, Matt Backerman, created "Now or Never Records" they then recorded their first EP, called The Dillinger Escape Plan, released in 1997, (there was a re-issue of the album later around 2000) and then their next EP Under the Running Board in 1998, (the latter was later picked up by Relapse Records.) Dimitri Minakakis was vocalist at this time. At this time the band went on a brief Northeastern America tour and then bassist Adam Doll became paralyzed due to complications in his spine after a car accident. Additionally, the band had started playing chaotic and frenzied live shows with music that reflected their on stage antics, for which they were becoming known for.

In between this time, 1998 the band was in the Nothing Left Fanzine #7 compilation CD. The tracklist is as follows: 1. Pave The Rocket - "Drool" 2. Saves The Day - "New Jersey" 3. Boy Sets Fire - "Pure" 4. Clairmel - "West of Willow" 5. Brandtson - "Round" 6. Texeko Jeudo - "Spell Racecar Backwards" 7. The Enkindels (was Enkindel) - "Monsters" 8. Cooter - "Bite My Nails" 9. Fastbreak - "Hate Your Way" 10. Panthro / Panthro UK United 13 - "Sound of A Gun" 11. Get High - "Angels In The Wave" 12. Latex Generation - "Central America" 13. The Marshes - "Whambulance" 14. The D.E.P. - "Mullet Burden" 15. Kid With Man Head - "You And Me" 16. Strike Force / Strike Force (4) - "Rope" 17. Mid Carson July - "Ringwald" 18. Sam The Butcher - "Walk Along" 19. Fck - "Crackhead" 20. Reina Aveja - "Sassy" 21. Stutterbum - "Waste of Time" 22. Autumn Lee - "The Poppy Song" 23. Rock, Star - "Believe In" 24. Bedford - "Built A Phone" 25. The Man I Fell In Love With - "Brantastic" 26. Mangus - "Where Did They Go" / "Where Did They Go?" 27. The Blacktop Cadence - "Station Me Wherever"

(Could not find a pic of this compilation, if you have one then feel free to give me a "headsup" on that, thanks.)

Around 1999 after all of this, the band would then sign a multiple album contract with Relapse Records. Their guitarist John Fulton left. So, Brian Benoit (Jesuit guitarist) took his place. Doll's bass spot was handled by Jeff Wood (bassist of M.O.D. / Method Of Destruction), their next album Calculating Infinity came out, (but it was first followed with a promo album) which prompted Mike Patton of (future Faith No More vocalist & his other project) Mr. Bungle (FNM for the more rock oriented and Mr. Bungle for the more experimental metal listeners) D.E.P. live shows then saw the additions of fireworks and fire breathing, etc. Their vocalist Dimitri left, and so did Jeff Wood (to form Shat) after some tours, including a show for "The Van's Warped Tour" (perhaps one of the largest rock festivals in the U.S.)

In 1999 the song "Abe The Cop" was in the Relapse Records compilation Relapse Records Sampler Spring 1999 with the usual "Relapse Records" artists in addition to: Morgion and Nightstick.

The group was involved in around two split works. The first being NJ with Nora on 05/20/99. Their song on the work was "4th Grade Dropout."

The second split was with Drowningman in 2000. The D.E.P. song in this was "Jim Fear."

The band then was included in the 01/23/01 compilation Contaminated 3.0 with the song: "Under The Running Board" along with the following bands: Nile, Origin, Cephalic Carnage, Dying Fetus, Nasum, Exhumed, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Burnt By The Sun, Suffocation, Amorphis, Soilent Green, Incantation, Coalesce, Mortician, Brutal Truth, General Surgery, Deceased, Luddite Clone, Pig Destroyer, Bongzilla, Benümb, Vile Path, Anal Cunt, Unsane, Neurosis, Flesh Parade (LA band), Today Is The Day, Nebula, Blood Duster, Human Remains, Disrupt, Phobia, Regurgitate, Disembowelment, Morgion, Mindrot, and Exit-13.

The band had a remix by Nic Endo of "43% Burnt" in the various artists album Diy-Fest 1 that appears to be based off of a festival with the same name. The other artists were: Jello Biafra / "Dr. Doolittle" (Dead Kennedys), Mystic, The Icarus Line, Creation is Crucifixion, White Collar Crime, Space Robot Scientists, Audiofile Collective, Miracle of 86, D-Stroy, Holocaust, King's Mob, Hanin Elias, Alec Empire, Matt Pizzolo, Howard Zinn (from work with Resident Genius?), Sander Hicks, William Upski Wimsatt, Ani DiFranco, Safiya Asya Bukhari, and Nicole Blackman.

What was left of the band around 2002 then went in search for a frontman, during that time Sean Ingram (Coalesce vocalist) and Mike Patton were vocalists, however their search would eventually lead them to Greg Puciato in the album after this one. Their next work, Irony Is a Dead Scene had Adam Doll come back for work on samples and keyboards. It also included a cover of an Aphex Twin (Richard D. James / Richard David James) song, "Come to Daddy." This marked the moment when Liam Wilson would pick up bass for them.

Still in 2002, the band contributed to the Black Flag tribute LP, Black On Black: A Tribute To Black Flag (Volume 3). The band had the songs "Damaged Part 1" and "Damaged Part II." Along with them were the bands Anodyne and American Nightmare.

On 09/17/02 the band recorded a live album on the BBC.

Around 2003 the band put out a live LP called, Cursed, Unshaven, and Misbehavin': Live Infinity. This LP was recorded around the time that the band was on tour with The Misfits / Misfits, it had four tracks, two from Under The Running Board and two from Calculating Infinity.

Then around 2003 came the Contamination 5.0 compilation with D.E.P.'s "Destro's Secret (live)" and bands like: Mastodon, Origin, Nile, Dying Fetus, Nasum, Suffocation, Alchemist, Cephalic Carnage, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Skinless, Burnt By The Sun, Dysrhythmia, Gadget, The End, Exhumed, Mortician, Gorerotted, Red Harvest, Benümb, Regurgitate, Pig Destroyer, Disfear, Cryptic Slaughter, Soilent Green, Bongzilla, High On Fire, Genocide Superstars, Pentagram, Repulsion, Blood Duster, Uphill Battle, Today Is The Day, Neurosis, Human Remains, Daylight Dies, Hemdale, East/West Blast Test / East West Blast Test; Employer, Employee; Contrastic, Broken Bones, Alabama Thunderpussy, Halo - "Rise," Amber Asylum, and 27 (with "Warm Hands, Cold Heart.")

The Contamination Festival 2003 Dvd which was filmed at The Trocadero Theater in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and had artitst have multiple songs; The D.E.P. had "Hollywood Squares," "The Mullet Burden," "Variations On A Cocktail Dress," "Sugar Coated Sour" and "When Good Dogs Do Bad Things." Along with them were such artists as: Mastodon, Cephalic Carnage, Burnt By The Sun, The End, Dysrythmia, Pig Destroyer, Bongzilla, High On Fire, Today Is The Day, Neurosis, Alabama Thunderpussy, Daylight Dies, and 27 (who had the songs "Cavalla" and "Easy Trigger.")

After this was Contaminated 6.0 that had D.E.P.'s "43% Burnt" and the same artists as the previous various artists. along with Burst and Unsane.

The record company "Buddyhead Records" put out a compilation album called Buddyhead Sucicide on 02/10/04. The band had two tracks featured, one was a Billy Idol cover.

- The tracklist on CD 1 is: 1. The Icarus Line - "Love Is Happiness" 2. Your Enemies Friends - "The One Condition" 3. Radio Vago - "Shudder" 4. "Torture Device vs. Fat Records" 5. The next album with Greg Puciato, Miss Machine, would take the band to the next step around 2004. First there was the Miss Machine: Two Song Sampler that would have "Panasonic Youth" and "Baby's First Coffin" as the songs. There would also be singles for the songs "Panasonic Youth," "Unretrofied," and "Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants." The latter single had a track on it called "Setting Fire To Sleeping Giants (Call-Out Hook)."

Their song "Baby's First Coffin" would be on the movie Underworld and the band would play England's "Reading Festival" in 2002, there Greg would "Defecate onstage into a brown bag and hurl it at festival goers and apparently also smeared some on himself." This was perhaps one of the nastiest acts to have transpired at the festival, since Ozzy decapitated a bat with his teeth... but, because of this they received a lot of attention and was later considered as one of the top performances at the festival for The Decade. (That's right, go metal.) The band would go on to tour with Big Names like: System Of A Down, Dream Theater, Megadeth, Symphony X, Nevermore, and Slipknot, etc. However, the injury at this time was from Brian Benoit who had nerve damage and could not play, James Love (Fenix*TX guitarist) took his spot for live shows. During the Dave Mustaine (Megadeth vocalist / guitarist) "Gigantour" D.E.P. guitarist Ben Weinman had an issue with a vertebrae injury from a past show as well. Jeff Tuttle (Heads Will Roll & Capture the Flag guitarist) took over on his behalf for live shows.

Around August 2004 was the All Areas Vol. 52 compilation that came with "Vision Magazine" #137, on it was: 1. Sparta - "End Moraine" 2. Taking Back Sunday - "Set Phasers To Stun" 3. The D.E.P. - "Baby's First Coffin" 4. Trashmonkeys - "Song No. 1" 5. Rantanplan - "Sissy" 6. Swosh - "Over" 7. Hundred Reasons - "How Soon Is Now?" 8. Lockjaw - "Fire In The Underground" 9. The Butterfly Effect - "Consequence" 10. Pendleton - "Oblivious Circle"

In 2004 the band was in the Xtaster Summer CD 2004 with the following songs: 1. B*tch Alert - "Sunsets You Know" 2. Mastodon - "Blood And Thunder" 3. The D.E.P. - "Pansonic Youth" 4. Hollywood Ending - "Beginning of The Middle" 5. Far From Heroes - "Ashes" 6. Aphasia - "We All" 7. Terra Diablo - "Dehumanize" 8. Happylife - "Paragon" 9. Beatsteaks - "Vision" 10. The More I See - "Suck On These Words" 11. Steriogramm - "Ka" 12. Green Frog Feet - "Riot Girl" 13. Cosmic Casino - "Lifesaver" 14. Warren Suicide - "Black Planet" 15. Mass - "Testify" 16. Sureferosa - "Lucky Lipstick" 17. Planet of Women - "Waking Up The Neighborhood" 18. Hydrous - "Fallen Son" 19. Seventhsun - "It's The First" 20. Moabeat - "Top Model"

An iTunes EP called Plagiarism as well on 06/13/06. On that are covers of: Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, Massive Attack, and Justin Timberlake; along with radio edit of "Unretrofied" and a live version of "Perfect Design."

Later on, the Miss Machine: The DVD came out in 06/27/06.

Then the current drummer Chris Pennie decided to play for Coheed and Cambria (I got to meet him, really humble guy, but that is for another time).

After all of this, the band went on to record Ire Works around 2007 with Gil Sharone (Stolen Babies drummer) as their drummer. Notably Brent Hinds (Mastodon guitarist & vocalist) and Dimitri Minakakis were each featured on a song in said album.

In 2007 as well there was the Rock Sound 115 compilation with the following: 1. D.E.P. - "Milk Lizard" 2. Carbon / Silicon - "The Magic Suitcase" 3. Motion City Soundtrack - "Broken Heart" 4. The New Story - "Make Me Bleed" 5. Monster Magnet - "Wall of Fire" 6. Hardcore Superstar - "Dreamin' In A Casket" 7. Gerson - "Ridono di Me" 8. Lombroso - "Cosa Stai Dicendo" 9. Settlefish - "Head Full of Dreams" 10. Winter Beach Disco - "Panic At The Vineyard" 11. Os.cu.re - "Allergico (Alle Legge) 12. Vitreo - "Scars" 13. Lento - "Need"

Ire Works had more mainstream success than the previous: the song "Milk Lizard" was on CSI: NY and the band played "Black Bubblegum" live on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. After this time, Gil left the band and Billy Rymer became their drummer (he is currently as well). Notably he was in a "drum-off" with Mike Portnoy (a well respected drummer of: Dream Theater, Avenged Sevenfold, Liquid Tension Experiment, Transatlantic, and The Winery Dogs, etc.) The band went to Australia to play "Soundwave Festival" and got to assist Nine Inch Nails with two songs "Mr. Self Destruct" and "Wish."

Around December of 2007 the song "Milk Lizard" was amongst this lineup of artists on the compilation Maximum Metal Vol. 122 by "Metal Hammer" magazine: Agnostic Front, Primordial, Pagan's Mind, Crashdïet, Svartsot, Vesania, Fall of Serenity, Axxis, and Samorra.

Around 2009 the band began "Party Smasher Inc." their record label (No Machine, Primitive Weapons, and Giles Corey appear to be on the label) which is partnered with the label "Season of Mist" from France.

In 2010 there was a compilation called Bugging Your Ears by Rock Sound Magazine. The tracklist is: 1. D.E.P. - "Farewell, Mona Lisa" 2. Rinoa - "Memory" 3. Pianos Become The Teeth - "Filal" 4. Airbourne - "Get Busy Livin' " 5. Year Long Disaster - "Show Me Your Teeth" 6. The Automatic - "List" 7. Eaststrikewest - "Fields" (or "Marionettes" ?) 8. Tacoma Narrows Bridge Disaster - "Duggah" 9. Daughters - "The First Supper" 10. The JCQ / The James Cleaver Quartet - "I Do, You Do, We Do Voodoo" 11. The Smoking Hearts - "Thrash B4 Gash" 12. Close Your Eyes - "Song For The Broken" 13. Kenai - "The Fall Before The Finish" 14. Die! Chihuahua Die! - "Stuck Pig" 15. Kruger - "The Ox"

The first work on this label was Option Paralysis (if you like that album, they released an impressive limited edition Box-set for it as well in July 2010.) The band then went on tours again, such as: "The Van's Warped Tour" & "Soundwave Festival." The bills had bands like: Iwrestledabearonce (from Louisiana), Thursday, and Deftones, etc. Notably the band had their first South American "Rock al Parque" show in Bogotá Colombia, where they headlined on the second stage. Then late 2012 Jeff left the band (to pursue his own film and music works), James Love would fill in for him during live shows. Kirk Hammet (guitarist of Metallica) praised the song "Farewell, Mona Lisa" from that album, on Twitter.

The song "Farewell Mona Lisa" got its own single.

In 2012 the band was on the "Impericon Stage" for Groezrock in Meerhout, Belgium in 2012 along with: Parkway Drive, Heaven Shall Burn, Evergreen Terrace, Miss May I, For Today, The Ghost Inside, We Are The In Crowd, The Copyrights, Royal Republic, and Paceshifters. On the main stage were: Authority Zero, Lagwagon, Yellowcard, Rancid, Reel Big Fish, Bouncing Souls / The Bouncing Souls, None More Black, Belvedere, The Menzingers, Heideroosjes, Face To Face, and Chixdiggit. On the "Back To Basics, Etnies" stage there were: Gallows, Set Your Goals, The Wonder Years, Counterpunch, Off With Their Heads, B.E.A.R, Hostage Calm, Banquets, Hazen Street, Lifetime, Confession, and Verse. Lastly, on the "Acoustic Stage" was: Yellowcard, The Bouncing Souls, Face Tomorrow, Dustin Kensrue, Garret Klahn, Mikey Erg, and Vienna.

Still in that year and according to a site called Bravewords.com the compilation Falling Down II originally was to have "Farewell Mona Lisa" but it does not appear on the tracklist of other websites. According to my sources the tracklist for CD 1 is:

- 1. Across Tundras - "Final Breath Over Venom Falls" 2. Icos (was Monachus) - "Februari" 3. White Hills - "Heads On Fire" 4. Ocoai - "La Main Electrique" 5. Farflung - "R-Complex" 6. Impure Wilhelmina - "Cold Fever" 7. Time To Burn - "Elena Djinn" 8. Gnaw Their Tongues / Maurice de Jong - "We Breathe Hate And Spit Fire From Our Mouths" 9. The Poisoned Glass - "Silent Vigil" 10. Kalvria - ".N" / "N" 11. U.S. Christmas / USX - "Lazarus" 12. Kingdom - "Ruina Where Men Go To Die" 13. Kalkh-In(Joy) Erode - "Xwck" 14. Kongh - "Thunders Collide" 15. Tesa / T.e.s.a. - "Untitled"

- CD 2 appears to have: 1. Omega Massif - "Am Abgrund" 2. Kodiak - "By The Sea" 3. When Icarus Falls - "Nyx" 4. The Ocean - "Asslickers Incorporated" 5. The D.E.P - "Farewell Mona Lisa" (or omitted?) 6. Kehlvin - "Who By Fire" 7. Jucifer - "Marianas" 8. Ufomammut - "Astrodronaut" 9. God Is An Astronaut - "Shining Through" 10. СОЛЯРИС - "Mirage" 11. Taint - "Black Rain (Live)" 12. Mumakil - "Dawn of Slugs"

For the more recent to 2015 times, the band signed to Sumerian Records and released their most recent record One of Us Is the Killer and D.E.P. would be openers for the Soundgarden & Nine Inch Nails tour, due to Death Grips disbanding. The band is talking about recording a new album as well. They have added Kevin Antreassian as guitarist and will continue making their chaotic and intense music. A single was put out for the song "Prancer." And then in 05/20/13 there was a deluxe edition of the album that included two more songs, "One of Us Is The Killer (Easy Girl Remix)" and "Nothing's Funny (demo ver.)" There is also a remix of a song on YouTube called "One of Us Is The Killer (WIFE remix)" as well.

Furthermore, Greg Puciato was in Killer Be Killed a supergroup with: Troy Sanders (Mastodon vocalist & bassist), Max Cavalera (Soulfly guitarist & vocalist), and Dave Elitch (The Mars Volta past drummer). Interestingly Greg played guitar in some of the Killer Be Killed album, whereas in D.E.P. he does not appear to. (Will most likely do an article on that band later).

In 2013 a Russian label called "Soundrate" put out an album called Heroes of The Soviet Union: Tribute to The Dillinger Escape Plan. On the album are: Greenpills, The Hysteria, Septa, Concise, She Oak, The Crossed, The Nietzsche, Thorazine Shuffle, and Daunhaus.

In 2014 the band released a song called "Happiness Is A Smile" this was set to only be obtained at their merch tables on tour in both cassette form and vinyl.

As an aside on April 9th of 2016, Pink Ribbon Bakery made some special D.E.P. themed cupcakes. This shows that the band is well-known even past the barriers of music. This is one band on its own label that is going to be successful in creating music, and the business side as well. Altogether the group has also played with the following artists: Killswitch Engage, Candiria, Drowningman, Shining, Time In Malta, Burn It Down, Trashtalk / Trash Talk, National Acrobat / The National Acrobat, Upsilon Acrux, Retox (with Justin Pearson of: The Locust, All Leather, Head Wound City, Holy Molar, Swing Kids, and Some Girls; with Michael Crain of The Festival of Dead Deer, and Brian Evans who replaced Gabe Serbian), and Caste, etc.

In closing, a band that puts out chaotic music + a chaotic history = chaos. But, they do it very well and have consistently. When one mentions (Mathcore, should you believe in sub genres) D.E.P. are among the most known in that genre. Musicians will appreciate the complexity this band has to offer and has offered. Furthermore, the time signatures not only on drums, but bass and guitar are seemingly copied by many bands today. But, in the live shows their vocalists or frontmen have stood out and Greg Puciato just adds to the intense and frantic stage presence of what may be one of, if not the world's most dangerous band. They certainly have paved the way for Mathcore and its contemporaries. Somehow, as clever and dangerous as John Dillinger was, one can almost surmise that he would listen to them, would you do the same?

(The pictures used were taken from the internet. The links to them can be provided if need be. Thanks to John Fulton for the Malfactor & Samsara demo mp3's.)
